The Benefits of Natural Food - Land of Holistic Pets

Posted: 07-07-2012

I’ve been trying Mindy on some different food for a couple of days now, and thought I'd let you know how she's been getting on with it. I do like to feed her natural food, and I think it’s worth spending a bit more to make sure you are feeding them good, quality ingredients.

If you look at the ingredients section of a lot of the famous dog food brands you probably won't even be able to pronounce what goes into it, let alone know what it actually is (have a look at your dogs food and see if this is the case for you).  I think it’s crazy - we know how important our children’s diets are to their health, wellbeing and behaviour, yet many of us don't seem to think about what our dogs are eating.

I'm sure you've heard me say before about how diet should be taken into account when you're thinking about behaviour, and this is something your vet will be more than happy to discuss with you if you're worried at all. This is what we did with Mindy about 6 years ago - we were told that she would be calmer on a more natural diet, and so we changed, and the benefits were huge, not just in terms of behaviour but her general condition improved – brighter eyes and a shiny coat.

So now we are giving Land of Holistic pets a go, and for the last couple of days we've been trying the salmon and potato food. When I looked through the ingredients I was really pleased to see what was in it (Potato Flakes, Salmon Meal, Carrot Flakes, Spinach, Salmon Oil, Green Beans, Broccoli, Seaweed, Peas, Sunflower oil, Oregano, Sage, parsley, Thyme and Spearmint).

What's slightly different about this food to the one she's been on for the last few years is that with this, you have to mix in hot water, which made it smell really, really delicious. Dogs have relatively few taste buds compared to us (we have 9,000 while dogs have around 2,000), so it’s the smell which really gets them interested in food. This makes it great for the more fussy dogs too, who might usually turn their nose up at food.

Anyway, I took some pictures of her enjoying it and thought I’d share them with you. Tallulah tried to get in on the action too, little rascal.
